After weeks of being fired from Disney, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter is suggesting otherwise. For those of you that aren’t caught up in this matter, on July 20, 2018, James Gunn was fired by Disney for inappropriate tweets made by the Guardians of The Galaxy director nearly a decade ago. Since then, it appears that Gunn has been trying to make a better man of himself by not making those types of comments.
Even the Guardians of The Galaxy cast wrote a letter supporting James Gunn after these unfortunate events; not that they support his tweets made a decade ago, but rather how the situation at Disney was handled. Dave Bautista (who portrays Drax in the Guardians films and Avengers: Infinity War), has openly stated in a tweet that he would do what is “legally obligated” of him but doesn’t support Disney’s actions, whatsoever.
There Have Been Recent “Conversations” Between James Gunn and Disney
All of that being said, new reports are suggesting that Disney and Gunn may not be done with each other, after all. A situation involving a large company such as Disney to fire someone like James Gunn, who was involved in some of their most popular titles coming out of Marvel Studios, it’s not as simple as “you’re fired, go home.” There are contracts and things that have to be settled in a timely manner, and according to the report, Disney would have to payout Gunn an estimated $7 million to $10 million, if not more than that. However, in the article, two different sources say that he may return to helm another Marvel project.
“An end-all verdict hasn’t been issued and conversations with Marvel are still ongoing,”
It’s also important to note that Gunn had already submitted a script to the studio before his alleged firing status. At first, it was rumored that Disney would rewrite the screenplay, however in the same THR article, Disney will use Gunn’s screenplay.
James Gunn’s Potential Future Without Disney
Even if Disney doesn’t keep Gunn, many other juggernaut film studios are showing their interest in snatching James as soon as possible. It’s been reported that even Warner Bros. wants Gunn; possibly to develop and direct a comic book movie within their DC cinematic universe. It’s certainly possible that Gunn would take WB’s offer, but one of two things would happen. For one, he may want to steer away from comic book movies for a while if he does get released from Disney. On the other hand, he may jump on a comic book property right away, considering he’s shown to be very skilled after successfully making two Guardians of The Galaxy films. Either way, James Gunn will be fine as far as jobs go. It’ll be interesting to see where he ends up, but hopefully, he will stay with Disney and finish out his third installment of the Guardians franchise or at least stay to develop a different Marvel project.
