It appears that Warner Bros. has added another film in the DC universe. Deadline has confirmed that a film featuring the titular character, Supergirl, is currently in development. The film has yet to have a director or producer attached, but Deadline also reported that Oren Uziel will pen the script. Uziel is known for his scripts for 22 Jump Street (2014) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018).
Does This Announcement Hurt or Help DC?
Warner Bros./DC has been quite the rollercoaster for the last couple of years. This is also the same company that’s promised multiple different film slates and nothing comes to fruition. Because of how Warner Bros. has treated the DC fans, I wouldn’t be surprised if this film never gets made. It’s important to realize that not everything goes as planned, however, this is a very reactionary company that is known for changing.
As for helping or hurting the DC movie universe, (which is now called Worlds of DC), I think it’s too hard to tell at this point. Seeing that the film doesn’t even have its star, shooting may not begin until fall of next year, probably not until 2020. Man of Steel is arguably the best movie to come out of this cinematic universe, and we’ve yet to see any signs of them making a sequel. Not only that, but we don’t even know who our new Batman is.
Personally, I would love to see a standalone Supergirl film, but it’s too hard to focus on DC films that won’t even come out for another 3-5 years. That being said, I’m very excited about Aquaman, Shazam!, and the upcoming Joker film. One of the things to make these films feel different and exciting is because they’re trying something different, and that’s perfectly fine. Announcing a Supergirl film sounds different to me, and that’s fine. I do hope this movie gets made, but I’ll want it even more if an actress and director gets announced.
DC’s upcoming release dates:
- Aquaman – December 21, 2018
- Shazam! – April 5, 2019
- Joker – October 4, 2019
