‘Supergirl’ Is The Latest Film To Be In Development At Warner Bros.

It appears that Warner Bros. has added another film in the DC universe. Deadline has confirmed that a film featuring the titular character, Supergirl, is currently in development. The film has yet to have a director or producer attached, but Deadline also reported that Oren Uziel will pen the script. Uziel is known for his scripts for 22 Jump Street (2014) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018).

Does This Announcement Hurt or Help DC?

Warner Bros./DC has been quite the rollercoaster for the last couple of years. This is also the same company that’s promised multiple different film slates and nothing comes to fruition. Because of how Warner Bros. has treated the DC fans, I wouldn’t be surprised if this film never gets made. It’s important to realize that not everything goes as planned, however, this is a very reactionary company that is known for changing.

As for helping or hurting the DC movie universe, (which is now called Worlds of DC), I think it’s too hard to tell at this point. Seeing that the film doesn’t even have its star, shooting may not begin until fall of next year, probably not until 2020. Man of Steel is arguably the best movie to come out of this cinematic universe, and we’ve yet to see any signs of them making a sequel. Not only that, but we don’t even know who our new Batman is.

Wrapping Up

Personally, I would love to see a standalone Supergirl film, but it’s too hard to focus on DC films that won’t even come out for another 3-5 years. That being said, I’m very excited about AquamanShazam!, and the upcoming Joker film. One of the things to make these films feel different and exciting is because they’re trying something different, and that’s perfectly fine. Announcing a Supergirl film sounds different to me, and that’s fine. I do hope this movie gets made, but I’ll want it even more if an actress and director gets announced.

DC’s upcoming release dates:

  • Aquaman – December 21, 2018
  • Shazam! – April 5, 2019
  • Joker – October 4, 2019

Are you excited for the Supergirl movie announcement? Do you think this will hurt or help the DC cinematic universe? I want to know your thoughts. Drop your comments below!

  1. I am excited about this but in my opinion they need to focus on the core films surrounding the Justice League. Aquaman is a start but they need to follow up with origin stories like Cyborg and the Flash (which is a joke because they keep dropping it!) Anyway if this movie happens I hope it lives up to its hype!

    • Yeah, I agree. The fact that DC can’t focus on one thing baffles me. And you’re right, they should focus on Cyborg and Flash. They should have done that before ‘Justice League’ came out in the first place.
